Last week I was fortunate enough to attend the Social Media Marketing 2010 conference as a guest blogger. The objective of the event was to create an open environment, bringing together leaders in the industry and those keen to expand their knowledge and contacts in social media to discuss how to harness the viral power of social networks. Event collaborators, Murray Newlands and Luke Brynley-Jones did a fabulous job and received a lot of positive comments. For those that missed the event, you can follow the excited chatter of the event by using hashtag #SMMUK10. This blog post includes a snapshot video of the event and the presentations of the guest speakers. Thanks to Synthesio for sponsoring this great event!
Social Media 2010: the movie
Key takeaways
The most significant takeaway from this event was the valuable contacts that I made, these are connections and friends that go beyond the one day event. Topics ranging from measurement, monitoring, viral content, search, writing for social media and trends were shared via best practice case studies so that participants had the opportunity to learn from actual campaigns that took place. I found this approach incorporating the use of case studies really useful and practical although it is important to point out that while we can learn a great deal from looking at case studies we shouldn’t use them as a set formula to mould other social media campaigns. Every campaign and brand needs to be approached individually focusing on the achievement of the business objectives.

The next conference
The next conference will be held San Francisco on 8th July and is set to sell out shortly while the next conference in London will be held during September. We ended the day with an interactive panel discussion on the key trends in social media, I believe the next conference will touch on this and go into further case studies on the development of the industry and how we can play our part in shaping it. You can keep up to date with the upcoming events by joining the LinkedIn group.
